Task 4: Directors commentary Script

This is the script for the directors commentary we did:

Habeeb: In the production stage we shot using Sony FS100 camera at 25p in full HD. We used various different lenses of a fixed focus length as opposed to a zoom lens. For example for the wide shots we used 18mm lens and for the close ups a 85mm one. For the mid shots we used either a 50mm or 35mm lens. This gave the film the cinematic look that we desired. A Sony NX5 camera was used to shot the slow motion shots with bubble gum.

Anastasia: In order to achieve lip sync, we converted an iPad into a digital clapperboard with colour bars, time code and the music track recorded onto it. This we held in front of the camera before each take, using it as playback for the girls to lip sync to, This track we then uploaded to FCP as the sync track for the edit.

Holly: During the post production we uploaded the footage to FCP, logged the shots and organised them into bins relating to each scene of the video. This gave us greater clarity when we were editing. We also colour labelled the shots so that we could differentiate between the good and bad takes. The next task was to lip sync the visuals to the music track. This we did by matching the time codes from the different shots to the sync track we had already laid down.

Anastasia: We then started the creative part of edit making the video actually work. We had already achieved the look and feel that we desired during the shoot and because we had cut a storyboard animatic during the pre-production the edit was relatively simple, although there were changes between the three stages of production. We also cropped various shots and scaled and digitally panned across some of them. This helped to make the video more visually interesting.

Holly: In the final stage of the post production we exported the final cut to a programme called color. We then graded the video so that each shot matched the other, adding the final gloss to the finished product and furthering its aesthetic qualities.

Task 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

This is the directors commentary we did yesterday in the editing suite.

Task 4: Animatic

In shooting the animatic we shot each individual picture of the storyboard. Animatics helps to give us a visual image of what our music video will look like. The animatics helped us worked out the timings and if the music and pictures worked well together. It is a creative representation on what the storyboard will look like. We used a FS100 camera which helps to make it look more professional. We also edited the animatic in Final Cut Pro and we used boring as backing music to the animatic this is to help give us an impression of what the real music video could look like.

Task 4: Research

In our research we used the Internet as a research tool this was to find initial ideas. The other search engines we used were You Tube, Vimeo these were to look at artists with similar genre of music videos and also research other music videos. We looked into a Nigerian pop video 'Pata Pata' by Temi Doll Face. Which we used as an idea for a anti-consumerism image. We also looked at this particular music video because they use bright, exaggerated colours.

By using digital media technologies I have used technological convergence to ensure that I have produced three products as a part of a successful campaign.  My use of final cut pro has enabled me to become a prosumer, a creator of media products to a near professional standard for example using the Sony FX5 digital film camera.  The use of Final Cut Pro as a piece of editing software has taught me how to select and organise a music video to a very high standard using semi-professional  media equipment.  I have also been able to share ideas and research global and industry standard products, for example as I have discussed with Temi Doll face.

Digital technology has made available to me opportunities to upload, share and distribute my products using You tube as a free online broadcast platform. Our video is broadcast via Hurtwood House media You Tube channel.  It is also interactive technology– audiences have been able to feedback, like and comment on my products. These new skills learned on this course have enabled to gain experience not only as a user of digital technology, but also to also become a producer – important to an understanding of the media in an online age.
Henry Jenkins is very interested in this ‘participatory culture’ and most specifically how the Internet has brought it to the forefront through offering opportunities for regular audience members to produce and upload their own products – something that I have achieved by creating my own website using Wix.
